Essential Travel Items for Muslims
For Muslim-friendly travel, in addition to general necessities, there are specific items and equipment that help ensure the smooth and convenient performance of religious duties (prayer and halal food) anywhere in the world.
For ease of preparation, I've divided the essential items into three main categories:
1. Prayer Essentials
The time and place of prayer are paramount when traveling.
Pocket Prayer Mat: Choose one made from thin, lightweight, waterproof parachute fabric that folds down to a small size. Some models have weights at the corners to prevent them from being blown away by the wind.
Portable Prayer Set (for Women): A prayer covering (Mukena/Telekung) made of cool, lightweight fabric that folds easily into a small bag.
Qibla Compass: Even though smartphones have apps, carrying a small analog compass is very helpful in case the battery runs out or there is no internet signal.
1. Portable Water Bottle or Bidet: Very important for cleaning (istija') and performing ablution in public restrooms in countries without bidets.
2. Food and Provisions (Halal Food & Dining)
Finding halal food in some countries can be challenging, so preparing in advance is very helpful.
Ready-to-eat halal food supplies: Carry dried food, canned food, or ready-to-eat meals (MREs) with a halal mark, such as chili paste, canned fish, or instant noodles for emergency meals.
Portable cutlery and lunchbox: For peace of mind when eating, avoiding contamination from unreliable utensils.
High-energy snacks: Such as dates, almonds, or dried grains (energy bars), are great for snacking during travel or for fasting if your flight schedule coincides with a voluntary day.
3. Technology and Applications (Digital Tools)
Smartphones are the best tool for solving problems during your trip. Download these in advance:
Multipurpose applications: Such as Muslim Pro, THIC, or HSFT to check prayer times in each city, and check the Qibla direction. And find the nearest halal restaurants or mosques.
Power Bank: Since you'll need to use your smartphone for maps and religious apps throughout the day, a backup battery is essential.
Google Translate (Offline language download): Helps in reading ingredient labels in supermarkets abroad to check for prohibited ingredients (such as pork gelatin, animal fat, or alcohol).
???? Additional Tips: Before every trip, it's recommended to research the Muslim culture and community of your destination in advance, and also save the coordinates of the main mosque or Thai embassy for peace of mind. Have a smooth and blessed trip!
